Affordable Housing Is In Trouble

Like many housing providers, S.U.N. Housing Inc. was once a federally funded program. The Urban Native Housing Program was introduced in 1978 providing subsidies for Indigenous people who could not afford market rents. Today, the program has ended for many housing organizations. 

In order to continue to provide housing we had to eliminate subsidies and offer a revised program called Affordable Housing which adjusts rents to 80% of market rent values. Some of our families’ rents increased over $1000 a month. This rise in our housing market risks housing security.
